Read Across America

To further celebrate "Read Across America," challenge your family to read diverse books from each region of The United States. Each book on the list is either set in the specific region, or the author/illustrator has lived or is currently living there.

LIbrary Spotlight: 2023-2024 Monarch Books

The Monarch Award is given annually to an author and/or illustrator of a book voted as their favorite by participating K - 3 children. The award is designed to encourage students to read critically and to become familiar with children's books, authors and illustrators.

The award is named in honor of the Monarch Butterfly. The butterfly symbolizes growth, change and freedom qualities that also characterize the emergent reader.

LIbrary Spotlight: 2023-2024 Bluebonnet Books

The Texas Bluebonnet Award is a unique program that encourages reading for pleasure for students in grades 3-6.

The Texas Bluebonnet Award is one of the most prestigious children’s choice literary awards in the United States. Each year, 20 books are chosen for the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. Schools and libraries around the state participate in the program, encouraging students to read a minimum of five books from the list. In January, students vote for their favorite title. The author of the book receiving the most votes wins the Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) which is presented at the Texas Bluebonnet Award presentation held during the TLA Annual Conference in the spring.

Read Five Then Decide

Nebbie students are encouraged to participate in the Bluebonnet challenge. Our librarian, Mrs. Milam, has a table set up with Bluebonnet book options, tracking charts & even a place for students to leave book reviews. Students who participate in the challenge will get to vote for their favorite book in January - and then all participants will be invited to a celebration cupcake lunch!

Celebration Cupcake Lunch

The winner of the 2023 Texas Bluebonnet Award was Memoirs of a Tortoise (written by Devin Scillian and illustrated by Tim Bowers). These students were celebrating with cupcakes after participating in the Bluebonnet challenge last year!
